“My DVR D861 series has a very noticeable humming noise, my guess is the hard drive, is that typical for this recorder? If the DVR is set from Continuous to Motion only then the recorder should stop humming until motion is detected, correct?”

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE DVR SET UP IN A COOL DRY PLACE WITH PLENTY OF VENTILATION . YOU MAY BE PUTTING UNDUE STRAIN ON YOUR DVR UNIT IF IT IS OVERHEATING. i HAVE MINE SET UP THE SAME AS YOURS AND THERE IS NO DISCERNERABLE HUMMING OR NOISE COMING FROM MY UNIT...THE NOISE YOU DESCIBE IS USUALLY CAUSED BY AN OVERHEATING OR FAILING HARD DRIVE...HOPE THIS HELPS
