Basically, a receiver is the term used to describe a stereo amplifier with a radio in it. With a 'surround sound' receiver, you plug in your TV (any size) and the sound comes out of your 5 speakers (two front, a center front, two back speakers and a subwoofer) for surround sound. You also run your DVD player and CD player through it to watch a movie or listen to music. The 'receiver' part means it has an AM/FM radio and "receives" radio signals. An AVR like this one acts like a control center for all of your audio and video equipment. In a nutshell, it makes the picture on your Tv look even better and the audio from your other equipment sound AMAZING. An AVR like this Marantz takes all the information from your sources and delivers that information to your Tv (to display a picture) and to your speakers (to give you audio/sound/music). Potential sources may or may not include 4K blu-ray players, cable/satellite Box, video streaming players like an Nvidia Shield or Roku Box, video game players like the Sony PS5 or XBox Series X, CD players, turn tables, HiFi audio streamers like the Bluesound Node 2i and even more (I'm sure I may be forgetting some). Please note: Many AVR like this one 'may' come with the ability to stream music from the internet using built in applications (like Spotify). The number of speakers you may connect range from one to five, plus an additional subwoofer (or two). Hope this helps.
