I have an unencrypted cable service. I do NOT use a cable BOX. I just plug my coax cable into the wall socket and directly into the TV. I had it search and it found the channel like the tv would for an antenna.

theoretically it should.
run the coax from wall to RF Antenna IN on this box
then a second RF cable from box out to tv. 
 then on the box menu scan channels using cable vs antenna. if the channels populate you are in business
after set up you can also run RCA Video Audio/R/L out to TV and view on line 1 or 2 if TV has that feature
Also has HDMI output if your TV can accommodate
I cut the cord 10 years ago and with this box and a good outdoor antenna I get 49+ HD channels in my area Lakeland /Tampa bay, FL

Hi Anonymous,
As far as I know, if the TV can find the channels with the antenna cable plugged into it, then the DVR should find them, as well. Obviously, you'll plug the antenna cable into the DVR now, then do a channel search with the DVR's remote. We're using a flat antenna panel placed in a signal-facing window. That plugs into the DVR, then we use an HDMI cable from the DVR to the TV - everything seems to be fine (except when weather is junky, which is why I'll put a stronger, roof-mounted antenna up soon.)
