When i got mine there was 2 options to purchase. 

Software that you had to pay for yearly which was for keeping your software up to date with all upgrades etc. the other was a one time purchase without upgrades that eventually would become obsolete and have to be repurchased for all upgrades

Hi. While I am certainly no expert on this matter, I purchased a similar product. The Tech warned me beforehand that if I selected that particular version and an update came out, I would need to purchase a new edition. I opted for a more expensive one that came with a 3 year subscription. Hope that helps somewhat.

I had the same issue. I bought mine Oct 2018 and purchased Office for Home and Students. I had use of the software for one month when I received notification that I needed to renew. At the time I couldn't deal with a disruption, so I purchased again. My bad for sure for not chasing it down, but I didn't have the time to get into a back-and-forth and be without.
