“Can a usb hub be used with this laptop or an adaptor for memory cards?”

You can, but there's a Surface Dock 2 that works on the charging port on the right side. It gives a number of ports including display output, and handles charging of the device. For quick and temporary use though, you can certainly use a regular USB dock or hub.

We purchased the j5create - USB-C Multi-Port Hub with Power Delivery for usb connections.

There are two female ports on the laptop. One is a regular, USB port, into which could be plugged a USB hub. The other is a USB – C port, which also could be utilized to connect a USB hub. I hope this answers your question.
