“What is the difference between a "clean" update or just an update from Windows 7? I heard you are given the option to do either. I heard that a "clean" update totally writes over the old Windows 7 and the other leaves it intact for a future "restore".”

Okay, an update or upgrade is installing Windows on top of Windows to upgrade from a lower version to Windows 10. This preserves your files and installed software. A clean install wipes out your hard drive and will erase data and installed software. The upgrade is the easier option (takes LESS work) but the clean install has fewer issues and generally performs better. This option takes longer but is well worth the trouble. BE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD DATA BAKUP AND ALL THE INSTALLATION SOFTWARE YOU WILL NEED TO PUT YOUR PROGRAMS BACK ON THE PC.

Had multiple problems with different softwares and viruses. I ended up having the disk completely erased and new OS so no going back. Can’t help with answer.
