I had this problem once too not with my recent purchase but with another Xbox controller!! So here is what you need to try to fix it! If it continues to happen after these fixes then you might need to return it or replace it! First make sure no other controller are turned on. Turn on the Xbox not using the controller! Then press the sync button make sure the Xbox is seeking a controller! Then turn on the controller and immediately press the controllers sync button! Let the light blink till they see each other! See if the problem happens again! Also check and see in your setting if your controller needs a firmware update!! Via a usb cable!! Hope this helps you!
