“What's the difference between this this controller and a controller + wireless adapter package? My son just wants to use the Xbox controller to play Xbox games on a windows 10 desktop. Would both controllers work the same for this?”

This is just the controller. Depending on your desktop set up the wireless adaptor package is just a usb dongle that lets the computer talk to the controller. If i remember correctly if your computer has bluetooth built in you wont need the adaptor. And one more thing xbox games will not run on a pc he would need steam or to buy the pc version of the games. Hope this helps

If it does not, you'll need to buy a blue tooth dongle to get it to connect.

The difference between the two is that one includes the adapter for computers that don't natively have bluetooth. If you already have Bluetooth on your PC, then the adapter is not necessary. It can also connect to your mobile phone as a controller if your phone has Bluetooth. No adapter needed for connecting wired headphones to controller, to listen to Xbox sound.
