Do you have to buy xbox live to play fortnite? null

I bought an Xbox bundle with a free game fort nite. I had to use the one time code on the card to play. The next day I bought the live and gold so my son could play. It would not let me play the game. There is no manual for the console. It took over an hour to set up a store bought game and it updated the game from the internet by downloading an updated version and it took for ever. Good graphics but I got to get a friend to help teach me how and why it want let me play.

An active Xbox Live Gold membership is required to play online multiplayer games, including Fortnite.
