Thanks for asking! Neither Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold are necessary to play games on Xbox Series S. The exception is that an active Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership is required to play games online. If your son already has a Xbox Live Gold account, he will be able to use it on Xbox Series S.
