My guess is this decision was made so that someone didn't inadvertently try to "recharge" non-rechargeable AA batteries as that would be a problem.

My recommendation is the Switch Pro controller. Though if you're on a budget the PowerA wireless controller is cheaper dealing, missing some features like rumble, a built in 48 hr battery, and amiibo support, but is an otherwise solid $40 remote that occasionally goes on sale.
