50 mile is a typical repeater range. The radio itself is only good line of site for a couple of miles at least for me here in the rockies. The mxt115 has access to repeater channels preprogramed into it. If you can't reach repeaters where you're at, the 50 miles won't work for you. The mxt105 does not have the preprogramed repeater channels while this one does. The mxt105 is a 5 watt radio and the mxt115 is a 15 watt radio. It will have a little more power, so a little bit more power to transmit. You should get a little more distance out of this radio than the 105 or your typical handheld. Your actual mileage may vary depending on environmental factors such as terrain, etc., So do some research in your area and see what others think.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you were in the PERFECT conditions with line of sight between the two radios and had a bigger antenna that was dialed in perfectly, you could probably make out what the other person was saying. Normal situations with normal conditions, I’d say 7-10 miles with trees and buildings around you.
