I did not have to add a credit card before activation. One tip I'd give you though, make sure all updates on your OS and all apps are up to date - or be on wifi as much as you can. You only get 250mb of data on the trial and it goes quick if apps start updating automatically and your "7 day" trial ends up being a "7 minute" trial.

I am certain if you try mint mobil you will be very happy. I am the hardiest customer on earth to please, a far as mobil phone service, I have had them all and att was the only one that did not drop my calls at certain locations. I was a mortgage loan broker it really teaed me off if i was talking to a client and my phone call got dropped or no apparent reason except i was in a specific location. Or if i was in Warsaw Mo.i had to walk up to the top of the hill to get he any reception at all. It was horrible at least with att i could talk on my bed, it was the only place in my house my phone orked. I tried them all!
