does this work with a Toshiba laptop from 2008? null

If you connect through HDMI you’ll be ok. I use Microsoft Share and Apple TV with it and can cast from any mobile device or tablet with screen cast capability. I image it would work with Google cast as well. Try a PCI or VGA to HDMI adapter.
