I threw mine away, also. Basically, connect to RF_IN jack on TV. Plug in power adapter, mount antenna, do a channel scan on digital channels, rotate antenna, do another channel scan, move to a window position, do another channel scan any time you move antenna and see which is best position.

Not sure if the instruction sheet is available online, however, he should make sure the antenna is securely attached to the TV, and he may have to change the location of the leaf until he gets the channels again.
