An unlocked phone means that you can take it and use it on any compatible carrier network, and then, if you want to switch providers, you just get a new SIM card and activate it with the new company. Basically, by buying an unlocked phone, you don't have all the bloatware (provider specific apps) that a provider put on their phones that they sell directly, which means you have more space for your own apps.
