Does activating the phone with Verizon's prepaid network count as part of their "Activate Today" discount? Or does it have to be a contract plan? Also, will they switch the sim card from my old phone to the new one? null

You have to activate with a contract plan in order to get the discount. Sim cards are free for the supported carriers, so not sure why you'd want to use your old one. FYI, your old phone # can be moved to the new carrier and has nothing to do with the sim card.
