There is a steel bracket that is approximately 3" thick that slides over the back of the desk. The bracket that screws inside the bottom for tightening the mount to the desk is maybe 1/2" so I would say you could use it on a top that is 2 1/2" to 3" thick comfortably. You would need it to be able to slide in horizontally at least 2" as well. There is an option to drill through the desktop which I think could go much thicker, but I wasn't interested in having a hole in the desk.
