It is absolutely a good complement for the Google Home Assistant! The mic is more responsive to my voice than using my phone. When I speak to it from anywhere in the kitchen or family room, it will interact with my smart devices. For example, If my Roku remote is not by me, I can just say "Hey Google pause the Roku" and it pauses. Also, I don't have to repeat myself when having the Google Home Hub turn on/off lights & outlets or control the Nest thermostats. The Google Home Hub's touchscreen controls for devices is another plus! Swiping down from the top of the display gives me quick access to the devices in the area where the Google Home Hub is located.

Your Google smart assistant is 1.... the assistant on your phone, Google Home, and Google Home Hub is one in the same. If you add a reminder to your account they all can see it, if you want to play music you can tell the assistant what device to play it on. If you use your phone, Google home, or google home hub and have a tv or chrome cast that allows you to cast, tell can all control it. So yes, it will work with the Google assistant. In fact in the setup, you can set a Google/Android tv device to be the displays main output for movies, youtube etc, or a google smart speaker to be the output if you wanted to. They are all one complete unified system.
