From everything I have read and understand they are backwards compatible with the older AC1200's. Actually, from what I understand, the router is a AC2200 and the Extenders are AC1200's just in a different package.

You can simply add additional Wifi points to your existing Google Wifi mesh system. We recommend a maximum of 6 Wifi points in a single mesh setup including the primary router.
