Do I have to plug the extender into my router? null

No mine works without a physical connection

No it is not plugged into the router. It is plugged into an electrical outlet, placed in a location where it can get a good signal from the router, It needs to be placed about halfway between the location of the router and the area where the wifi signal is not very good.
