No hard wire needed. I set it up wirelessly with my iPhone.

The Nighthawk does a pretty good job of initial setup. In fact, it may be more effective than any installer might be in certain specific cases. However, there are certain naming conventions and helpful setup options that may need to be changed for safety and performance. In these latter cases, a PC connection to the router would be required to make changes.
