Depending on how you set up the device. If you set the device up as a extender, yes you will have to connect and disconnect to the best signal. Let me reassure you that this extender is very strong and you may not need to connect to your router. I have a very large home with stone walls, etc. and I have zero problems. I have tried many extenders in the past that failed. The 2nd set up is to make the extender an access point. This will allow to continue the router signal and you will not have to switch between devices.. to make this extender a access point though you will have to actually connect it to the original router with cat 6 cable so it will not be wirless. If you have the capability of running cable to the area you need wifi this will work best for you. An acces point is what large buildings use in order to broad cast the signal to different parts of the building. The software included with this product has an easy setup for both of these options.
