This is just an extender. Can’t be used as a stand alone router.

It is not a standalone router but works great with the Nighthawk 1900 AC if you are using it as an additional access point.

You are correct, it is just a firmware dumbed down version of the Nighthawk 1900AC router for $45 less.

It is just a wifi extender. It has no router capabilities like DHCP or firewall. However, it does have a USB port if you want to share a storage drive or a printer.
