Think of it as an AP (Access Point) it's simply extending the WiFi network based on it's location. I have moved my SSID to another location and I simply WPS my router and connected to the extender without any issues.

I had a similar concern but it works well with my Nighthawk. The software allows you to select which network to extend. The device appears to do the same as a mesh system as you don’t see it (the extended network) on your available networks.

All you need is this extender and it connects directly to your wireless network. I can't remember, but I think you can use the same SSID or create another one. It's nice to be able to use the same SSID.
