Actually you do not need a router. You need a modem. A router is usually a modem combined with a routing system. A single purpose modem for your cable company would be all that necessary. With a router you could disable the wireless capabilities, thus turning you router into a modem. A modem is typically cheaper than a router. A router is overkill and you're paying for the luxuary of features you are not using because you own the orbi which transmits a rock solid signal throughout your home.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you truly have 2 separate devices from the cable company - a standalone modem that the cable plugs into and a separate router that broadcasts the Wifi then yes you could give them back the router. But most likely you are renting a combination modem/router from the cable company. The Orbi handles the router portion only so you would still need to keep the cable company's device to act as the modem. In that case you just plug the Orbi into it to take over the router function and give yourself better Wifi coverage.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You'll still need the router for the wifi connection, however, I bought my own instead of renting from the cable company. Over the years I've saved money and the service is the same.
