Is it compatible with the D5000 series? null

The D5000-series cameras do not have an auto focus motor built-in to the camera. The camera will require lenses that have a built-in focus motor. Nikon denotes these type of lenses with an AF-S for Nikon's Silent Wave Autofocus motor. The 85mm f/1.8G does have a built-in focus motor. The lens will be compatible with the D5000-series cameras. Lenses that DO NOT have a focus motor can still be used. The focus, however, would need be obtained manually.
