We were able to play with friends online which is why we purchased it. It only works for a single profile.

Yes, once you enter the code you will have a subscription play games online.

You use the card to activate “Switch Online”. With that you have access to the games Switch makes available to members. Since the membership is about the price of one premium game, it’s generally a good deal.
