“Does this need to be placed on a mat to protect a hard wood floor?”

• We placed it on the mat mostly to protect our joints while working out with it. It's heavy and I imagine could create grooves on your floor over time without the mat. We bought 3/4 inch interlocking mats to create a 10x16 workout space. Our flooring underneath is concrete.
