Nvidia recommends a thumb drive actually. A Sandisk USB 3.0 for maximum transfer speeds. They make a 128GB one that I purchased from Best Buy (Nvidia has it listed under their Shield TV FAQ) and have formatted it as the Shields main internal storage. I play large games and they load fast and have no problem on this thumb drive. Hope this helps.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The newer version does not have a SD card slot unfortunately. I've had luck with multiple external hard drives, if you have the option just go with the highest data transfer rate you can afford
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I used an LG branded 200 gb MicroSD card with a USB adapter. It worked for a while, now it has disappeared. You can thank Apple followed by Samsung for that, closing the OS to external storage options so you buy more expensive phones. What I used mostly is a server, running FreeNAS, that has all my media on it. I was able to navigate to all the folders within VLC media player. Hope that helps. This is all over wired gigabit connection though. Can't speak to wireless performance.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.
