Blu-ray needs a disc and a player. This is only a streaming device. As far as 4K and HD (blu-ray) quality... it can stream HD and 4K perfectly. But that also depends on if your tv is 4K. If your tv is 4K and you find streams are 4K it can play it without any problems.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is not a Blu-ray This is a box for streaming and gaming Totally different But yes, this streams in 4K so long as your provider or download is 4K as well Hope that helps
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You need a blueray player if you want to play the physical disks. This will play DVD quality, Standard Blueray and even 4K quality media. It all depends on what you are streaming, but it will play whatever format is available. This does NOT play physical disks.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Shield console does not play physical discs of any kind, so if you wish to play Blu-Ray discs you purchase you will need to have a Blu-Ray player. However, if the discs you purchase have digital codes to redeem to be able to stream the same content (potentially in 4k if your screen supports 4k as well), then the Shield will support the 4k playback of that content. Standard Blu-Ray resolution is 1080p (1920×1080 pixels) while 4k screens supports up to 3840x2160 pixels. You may not notice the difference except on large screens and/or sitting close to them in a small room. So, as to your question on whether you still need a Blue-Ray player, you will always need some kind of compatible player for those physical discs. The Shield cannot replace the physical player, but it is an alternative for streaming and downloading the digital version of the physical disc's content.
