“I have Verizon service which includes: Internet phone service, internet, and TV. If i purchase this unit will i still need to activate service with these folks? If so, that means i will be double charged. I just need a phone to use the bundled Verizon”

I think you will end up paying double. My advise would be to activate so you can save your number and then change your bundle. I did that with Comcast and saved about $70.00 dollars a month
