You can still type. Typing can be easy and button selection or icon selection can be made a little more difficult. It’s hit and miss, really.
I would recommend it if you need to ensure your device is safe from kids.

I have several different IPads from the 1st generation, to air, 5th generation, to IPad mini and have never any problems with case interfering with keyboard or being able to activate keyboard when needed.
