Hello, Joanne! If you are using the answering machine, you can just press PLAY on the base. However, based on your description, you are using the voicemail service, which is provided by your phone company. For more information about this service, we would kindly recommend you to check with your landline provider directly.

you access messages locally with the answering machine. for what its worth, I have found when the phone company gets involved with your answering system, just call them and tell them to turn off their voice mail system.

Messages are accessed through the main base as long as you have it turned on. If you do, you just push the play button to hear messages others have left for you.
