No, it plugs into the base unit as well as to either your landline or wireless router.

You can use your existing telephone cable to connect the base unit to the telephone line, as long as it has the standard RJ11 connectors. Additionally, the charging units for the cordless handsets only need power from an electrical outlet and are not connected to the telephone line. -C
