“If the phone rings and two people want to talk to that person with two handsets, is that possible. I can't remember where I read that this cannot be done without pushing some extra buttons.”

If I'm not mistaken I believe all you do with the second handset is just push the Talk Button or the Speaker Button to talk on both handsets......
