• No, but if you want to take advantage of the clone/ copy function, it needs to be the same or larger. If you use a smaller drive you would need to reload the OS from scratch.

• Yes, it's easier if you are Cloning the drive from Old to New. No, if you are just replacing the drive and going to add new OS system and programs.
