• A:Answer It won't search anything. You have to plug it into your mac, let the drive be recognized then drag and drop your pictures folder into it and WALLA!! ...or VIOLA... (you know what I mean), it'll start transferring...

• A:Answer I don’t have a 2017 MacBook, therefore, I can’t answer your question. I do have a 2019 iPad and an iPhone 8 and a iPhone 11 ProMax and all three backed up the photos to the device. If you have photos albums then those albums will also show up with the accompanying photos.
