“I recently bought an LG SJ9 Soundbar. I have a Visio TV about 4 years old. I have no receiver and am using the soundbar, alone, with only the TV. My question is how this works with ATMOS sound? The sound is good, but not like surround sound.”

As far as this producing "terrible" surround sound, that is a very subjective thing to say. Surround sound is not an exact science mainly because most of the sounds from movies are added in after scenes are shot. Maybe concerts with Dolby are different story but surround setup is still usually different for every person. In my opinion, this soundbar does a better job than many. It is made specifically to enhance dialogue in a smallish room setting while still giving a virtual surround experience. This bar does NOT do ATMOS, only plain old 5.1 Dolby Digital. And you have to feed it exactly Dolby Digital 5.1 or the surround virtualization will not work properly.
