“If the Batteries die down after a year or so, can we still use this as a Plug and Play ?”

• Not sure if this is helpful or not, but you can connect your wireless controller to the xbox with no batteries in it at all... so in a sense, all wireless controllers can be Plug and Play.

• I'm not sure what you mean by plug n play? If the rechargable batteries fail buy a new one or go back to standard AA batteries. Also, I own two of these and have used them for years without an issue.
