Yes this will serve as your rear view mirror all the time. The picture is not as crisp as your actual rear view mirror but visibility is still good. Theres alot of features to this unit. Its pretty neat.

Yes! You can use this device as a regular rear view mirror by tapping the power button to turn the screen off.

As the person above states, the video from the back up camera is what you see when you look into the touch screen mirror. I asked the sales person what would happen if something went wrong with the camera, and he told me that the item does actually have a mirror on it, so if the screen portion is turned off, it can be used like a regular rear view mirror. I have not gotten to confirm this information yet.
