Not sure about the waterproofing for rain but yes it would work on a gate.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It's possible but totally depends on the distance between the sensor and the Ring base or working Ring sensor. If you have a working Ring motion or contact sensor within 50 feet or so (my experience - the advertised distance is much greater.) This could be the contact sensor on the nearest door used to get from your house to the pool, for example. The Ring system comes with a range extender that could be used if needed.
