Mine detects motion at about 15-20 feet away, and I have mine set on high. My purpose is for my elderly Chihuahua (has cataracts) so when she is outside, she can find her way back. The batteries seem to last a few months, but I have mine set to 3 minutes to give her time to get back. It is a nice spot light for the money and I am totally happy with mine, I highly recommend this spot light.
