Yes, a Ring Protect plan is required in order for events to be recorded and saved. Without this service, you will still receive real-time ring and motion alerts on your smartphone as well as have access to the live view feature. You need the ring cloud storage account subscription. I have had Ring for about 5 years and will never use anything else. It works great and you can choose dates and play back times.
