Yes the signal goes through walls. I have a doorbell on my front door & one on my side door which is a lot further away. My Chime is inside closest to the front door. I did buy the Chime with the Wi Fi extender. I bought the regular one but took it back and exchanged it for the pro with the wi fi extender. It did work on both though. My Internet connection is upstairs.

it goes thru the internet. as long as it can get wifi and your receiving device (phone, computer) is on the internet, you'll get the notification. similarly if you wire it in to the existing doorbell wiring, it'll ring your doorbell like a normal doorbell.

Wood and drywall between the RING device and the WiFi access point has only a very slight affect on the signal. Major contributors of WiFi 2.4ghz signal issues are distance to the access point, crowded airspace with lots of other WiFi with strong signals, stone walls or reinforced walls with rebar or metal (garage door).

I believe that both communicate through your wifi--I don't think they communicate with each other directly. So the distance is more dependent on your wifi setup.
