Besides costing twice as much, the original has a built in battery and the 2 has a removable battery pack (irrelevant if you are going to hardwire the unit). The original has to be removed from the mount and charged if utilizing built in battery power, where the 2 allows you to swap out the battery pack if you buy a spare. The 2 also features a higher resolution 1080 camera instead of the 720 in the original model. The original Ring doorbell is only $99, the Ring 2 with a slightly better camera and removable battery is $199 plus another $29 for a spare battery - the slight upgrade did not warrant the much higher price tag IMHO.
