If you have an existing wired doorbell then you don't have to charge it. If you don't then you'll have to charge it every 6 to 12 months. It all depends on the amount of motion at your front door.

If you have existing wiring from a previous door bell, it is super simple to hard wire to that. If you don't have the ability to hard wire, it comes with a cable to charge it via a USB port or a cell phone charger with a USB port. However, you will have to take the unit off the wall as the charging port is on the back.
