• If you choose to buy or rent a movie you must have a credit card on file; similar to other "free subscription services" that need the card in the event you decide to buy something through their service.

• I was able to register just fine, Without the need to enter any credit card. Mind you, I registered online and this is in regards to a "TiVO Roamio's OTA 1TB". I Can't speak for the other devices.
