Flawless DVR but apps a little slow

TiVo has always been the leader in DVR devices and this device lives up to the standard. Great for cord-cutters because it combines OTA channels with apps to help you find all seasons and shows you're looking for. I use this and subscribe to online TV service and have reduced my bill by more than half. Pros: TV and DVR work flawless without any hiccups and setup is easy. Easily add TiVo mini to access from another room. No monthly fees. Easily upgradeable. Supports all major app services in addition to Plex. Easily extended to second room with TiVo Mini. Abundant ports. Great UI Cons: Apps run a little slower than they would on new entertainment boxes like Apple TV or Fire TV. Streaming shows to phone or out of house requires purchase of additional TiVo stream.

I was paying $130 a month on Satellite services. I was fed up with misc. channels disappearing because of the fighting. So, I went to BestBuy bought an Antenna, TiVo Roamio and TiVo Mini. I bought the Roamio because I didn't want to pay a monthly fee. I recovered my cost for the Antenna, Roamio and mini in just 5 months and I love it. Picture is perfect there are a lot free TV station over the air (OTA). There are plenty of apps for the Roamio also, I mostly use Netflix, Amazon and even subscribe to a couple more like Cinemax and HBO for $10 more, well worth it! I have a great selection of movies and I record my favorite network shows that come OTA, what can I say I love it!

Removed my DirecTV dish and replaced it with a Channel Master Antenna and purchased this Tivo. Been a happy user for quite a few years now and the Menuing system is the best part of the Tivo. Has Smart TV apps included (note only HD NOT 4K) for Netflix, Hulu, PLEX (which I love) and a few more. Could just get an antenna and plug it into your TV (if it still has a tuner) but being able to pause Live TV is nice to have when needed. Tivo recorded shows for most major networks have the commercial skipping option which is great also.

Bought new on 7-2-16. It broke down 3 months later. Tivo sent a replacement that was rebuilt not new. It broke down within 4 days. They will not replace my new unit with a new unit instead sending another rebuilt unit. I paid for a new unit not a rebuilt one. Tivo - Poor Poor Poor

I'm in the process of cutting the cord and one thing I couldn't see doing without is the DVR, so I decided to give the TiVo Roamio OTA a whirl. Fortunately, it does the job and does it well. It's a bit of an up-front financial investment, but with the money you'll save every month on cable/satellite fees and the fact that TiVo no longer charges for the monthly guide service, it'll pay for itself in no time. The installation and setup was pretty straightforward and they give you a clear step by step guide to follow. After it's all hooked up, you turn everything on, follow the on-screen prompts, and register your account online. Once everything is activated, you're good to go. If you're coming from a different DVR service, the menus and features will take a little getting used to, but overall it's very well done. Having 4 tuners and all the major streaming media services (Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Huiu, etc.) built in is a major plus. All that being said, your experience will completely depend on getting a good Over The Air HD antenna that works best for your location. I would suggest experimenting with different antennas FIRST with just your TV, finding the one that works best for you, THEN buy the TiVo once you know you can get the channels you want. If you're not able to receive the station broadcasts you like to watch, the whole thing is pretty much pointless.

Makes watching television enjoyable again without breaking the bank. Has great easy to use program guides. Setup so simple anyone can do it. Better than cable. Pause, fast forward, skip commercials. Has everything you could ask for.

I cut the cord to cable several months ago and I was using an old TiVo S3 DVR with lifetime service. It died on me and I was able to resurrect it by re-imaging the hard drive in it. I even increased the hard drive space by using a 1TB drive I had lying around. Sadly, that hard drive died as well. I started to assume that the power supply on the S3 was dying. The capacitors were exhibiting "bulges" all too common with the S3 DVRs. Rather then spending $100+ on a new power supply for an old DVR with an outdated UI, I opted to buy the TiVo Roamio OTA with All-In service. It was like day vs. night. The additional streaming access on the Roamio was a welcome addition and they worked flawlessly, integrating so well with the TiVo interface. It even has a Plex player built in so all my movies I have stored on my Plex player play flawlessly as well. The interface is fast and snappy. The commercial skip is a time saver. The smaller remote is ideal. The 4 tuners vs the S3's two tuners meant we never had to decide on what show to sacrifice. I am glad I decided on the Roamio. I was so happy with it, I added the TiVo Stream so I can stream my recorded shows to my tablets and phones. Highly recommended!

I've been with cable my whole life and finally decided to cut the cord. I pretty must only watch the main networks anyways so I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. I'll probably still have to get a subscription to a streaming service to fill in the gaps though. As for the Tivo, it's easy to use. I keep pushing the wrong buttons on the remote since I'm used to my last one, but I should learn the new buttons soon enough. The commercial skip feature is awesome! It's available on most of the shows I watch, but not all of them. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase now that I'm getting used to not having 200 channels anymore :( but I'm glad to save the money.

This device does exactly what I was hoping for. Once I hooked up a good outdoor antenna, I was able to get a good signal to the device. Set up took about 30 minutes and was a little difficult but not too hard. Once I set it up it works very well. I am able to record any show I want as far as two weeks out. Also with the one pass I can click that and it will search for that show anytime it's on. It's fabulous!. The other thing I really like is the commercial skip. Press one button and it gets you within seconds of the show starting back up.

Love, love, love this TIVO. We have antenna TV and our options for recording shows are VERY limited. We purchased two units, one for my husband and one for myself. It has so many features and the learning curve is easy. Love the fact that I can record three shows and watch one. Seems the shows I watch are all on at the same time. It also frees us up to not be glued to the 'tube'. The data usage for schedule updates isn't even noticeable, since I have the most basic satellite internet package. For anyone wishing to 'cut the cord', this is the best option. One initial investment and you're done.

This Tivo is perfect if you get your TV over the air. The guide data is free for the life of the device. You'll be able to pause live TV, setup full season recordings, use the nice channel guide, etc. This Tivo also has an eco setting that will put it into a lower power mode when not in use. In low power mode, the Tivo won't record any programming other than your specific scheduled recordings (otherwise it's constantly recording stuff and using up electricity). You can still choose to have it on all the time, in which case it will constantly record shows it thinks you might like (as long as there's room). I rated it 5 stars because it does everything I wanted it to do and does it well. Be forewarned though, the initial setup is kind of a pain. The box will come up and ask you to enter all your information (which isn't done very quickly using the remote) and then have you enter your zip code, then will chug along for about 10 minutes only to eventually tell you there is no guide data for your zip code, and to enter another zip code. It then makes you start completely over (having to enter all your information again) multiple times as you try zip codes for surrounding areas, only to be told there's no guide data every time. So then you'll go online and start searching for problems like this, and see that others are experiencing the same thing. What's happening is the Tivo needs to update its firmware, but instead of that being the first step in the setup, or instead of there being any message anywhere that lets you know firmware is being updated, it just does it in the background while it keeps walking you through the setup, asking you to re-enter all your info, telling you no data for your zip code, etc, until it magically reboots itself at some point (after 20 to 30 minutes). Then it will go through the setup again, except this time it will actually be able to find guide data for your zip code, and the setup process will continue, but it still takes a while (and a couple more reboots) to fully complete. Overall, the setup process takes about an hour or so, and is pretty frustrating. But once it's up and working, it works great, and I didn't feel like that one time annoyance constituted removing a star.

    Best OTA DVR on market

I did research for trying to find the over the air type DVR and this Tivo Romio is the best out there. Also know that the features it offers as part of the lifetime subscription you get with it, is well worth it. This one has 4 tuners so you can record all primetime channels (ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX) and as long as you get good reception, it works extremely well. Skipping commercials is a breeze!!. The one beef (con) I have is that when you initially set it up to scan the channels it receives, that it adds SO MANY channels you can't view or watch. You have to manually go back in and remove them without knowing which ones are good and which are bad. That's a pain, but once you're passed that, nothing out there compares to what it can do for you. The guide is amazing and the OnePass setup for recording your favorite shows is also great.

I found it very difficult to understand the difference between the TiVo Roamio options. This unit is only for over the air programming and streaming sources, but NOT for cable/sat input. In exchange for giving up the cable input, you get the program guide for life for over the air programming. It includes 4 internal tuners that work off a single antenna input. The tuners pulled in lots of channels that my TV could even see. The program guide is very easy to use and works very well. I love the app for finding programs, setting up the Roamio to record, even using it as a remote control. It's really excellent and included in the price! My only complaint is that this particular model does not allow you to stream content to the app. Even though the TiVo Website says that you can, you cannot. You must purchase the TiVo Stream in order to view content on your Android or iPhone. This was a big disappointment. I would have purchased a Magnavox had I understood that.

I bought this so I could record programs off the air from my local stations. After reading the reviews, I ordered this and received it from Best Buy within a few days. Contrary to some of the reviews, the online registration process was quick, as was the setup of the TiVo. Including upgrading of the software, the unit was up and running in about two hours with no problems. It took a few days to get accustomed to the menus, and setting up the One Pass, not much different than when I switched satellite TV providers last year. This product is really great.

Great DVR for over the air tv antenna. The TV guide makes it easy to look at future tv shows, record, and watch later. I can record up to 4 shows at once, and it has a very large hard drive. With the TiVo Roamio there are no extra cost of service fees. I am very happy with my purchase.

    Roamio OTA

The Tivo Roamio OTA seems slow compared to the newer Roku's. Its also noisier, the fan is noticeable from a few feet away. I find the interface to be clunky. If I want to watch Netflix, I should have a Netflix button immediately available, whether its on the remote or on screen. It took me several days to get used to scrolling through the menu to find it. It also records programs I never asked it to record, like an empty hard drive is a vacuum that must pull in old recording of I Love Lucy or it will collapse on itself. The remote is peanut shaped and mostly round on the bottom so it won't stay put on the arm of my chair. Picture quality is good, but not 4K is not available. Those are the negatives. On the good side, I'm saving money, since I dropped cable TV and use an antenna on my roof to pick up the local channels. I have Netflix and Amazon subscriptions already. Tried Hulu for a month and dropped it. The remote is RF, so it doesn't need to be pointed directly at the box. Tivo's guide is the best. I used to use Windows Media Center but this is better. I wish I had caught it on sale. I checked prices for a couple of weeks before buying it and now its available for much less. It works, but the most important feature is its ability to save me from the cable company.

After getting familiar with all the features I was interested in, I found this unit easier to work with than I first thought. It does a lot more than I expected, offering many options for viewing, recording, etc. I would recommend it to anyone who "cuts the cord" and still wants to record programs from their local stations. It is designed to work only with an OTA (over the air) antenna. Depending on how strong an antenna is purchased, the number of channels available for recording will differ for each user.
