I can't really answer your initial question, but you can buy an external hard drive and add it to the TiVo to expand the amount of memory.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.As best I can tell, the Tivo records an exact copy of the transport stream being broadcast. It doesn't seem to convert or re-compress the data in any way, and there are no options in the menus (that I have found at least) that would do that. The Tivo does have and eSATA port to add additional storage, so you could add more space and increase the amount of programing that can be recorded.
